Brisbane, Queensland

Forty three WA orienteers travelled to Queensland to participate in the Australian Orienteering Championships. The event reports for each of the events are presented below.

The final event of the Orienteering WA bush season brought competitors into the rugged beauty of Avon Valley National Park for the State Long Distance Championships. First mapped for orienteering back in 1988, the area continues to test athletes of all ages with its areas of fast-running open wandoo forest, scattered rock features and tricky gully complexes.

Collie, WA

The 2025 Australian Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships took place in and around the town of Collie. Four exciting events were held from Friday 5th September to Sunday 7th September amidst changing and wet weather.

This past Sunday, Perth Modern School hosted NavDash10 on a brand-new sprint map, and despite stormy skies and bursts of torrential rain, more than 100 orienteers turned out for a fantastic day of racing.

The event was co-set by Nomads Liam Dufty and Riley McFarlane, with Rachel West as controller/organiser. Despite being Liam and Riley’s first time setting a bush event, lots of people were happy across the board with all courses.

The last bush event for 2025 is coming! It's the OWA Long Distance Championships, held on the map where OWA hosted the 2023 National Long Distance Champs as part of the Kambarang Carnival. Entry for championship classes is now closed, some courses are available to entrer on the day.

The 2025 Australian Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships will take place in and around the town of Collie, on the traditional lands of the Wilman and Kaneang people of the Noongar nation.

Come down to Collie and try the great courses on much...

Last weekend saw tight competition at two events - a sprint on Saturday and a long bush course on Sunday - under wildly varying weather conditions. Both were State Orienteering League (SOL) events; whether you took part or not, check out the current rankings at the SOL results page.

Perth Modern School is the oldest public high school and the oldest co-educational high school in Western Australia. It is located in Subiaco.

Constant wind and overcast skies didn’t put off orienteers at this year’s NavDash Relays, held at John Curtin College of the Arts in Fremantle. The campus is compact with plenty of stairs, undercover areas and some open spaces, which means orienteers really have to pay attention to where they are.

This weekend brings a double-header with a sprint on Saturday 23rd and a long bush course on Sunday 24th August. Although the events are set on very different maps - a school campus on Saturday and farmland on Sunday - you can expect fast running but physically challenging courses on both days.

Both of these are State Orienteering League (SOL) events, so you'll be able to earn some OY points if you wish to compete in your age category. They are also suitable for beginners and families.

Set by WA Nomads, the terrain used for this event is varied and includes open forest, some patches of thick vegetation, steeper hillsides with rock detail, and open fast-running areas.

Come join us for a fun and educational day of learning how to orienteer! Orienteering is a fantastic outdoor activity that combines navigation, adventure, and exploration. Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, this event is perfect for anyone looking to improve their skills or try something new.

The weekend’s forecast was terrible and, sure enough, it bucketed down on Saturday and into Sunday with nearly 5cm of rain for the 24hrs till 9am, leaving Nick and Duncan particularly bedraggled as they put out controls on Saturday afternoon and again on Sunday morning. The Dwellingup tracks are beautiful, however, so soaked up nearly all the water without becoming muddy or leaving massive puddles.

This double-header Championships weekend had something for everyone: a sprint on Saturday afternoon in a fine weather, and a Middle Distance bush course on Sunday morning in somewhat less fine weather.
