Perth Sprint Camp Weekend 3-5th March 2018
Over 600 maps, many sprint tips and many, many controls at the WA Sprint camp this weekend. Thanks to visiting coach Charlotte Watson for 3 full days of sprint training exercises, on campus and bush maps, that culminated with a sprint course and sprint relay this morning.
Around 60 eager orienteers assembled at Murdoch Uni on a perfect Saturday afternoon for the first of Charlotte Watson's Perth Sprint Camp sessions. After a warmup led by Joanna Maynard we applied our brains to a route choice exercise in pairs and a simplification exercise. The first emphasised how many different choices there may be between controls while the second showed how 'cluttered' a typical sprint map can be and how different it is to navigate when all that 'clutter' has been removed.
On Sunday we practiced some more key skills, direction into and out of controls and bush sprints, and on Monday we put together everything we’d learnt for a mini sprint competition consisting of a line course and a 2 team sprint relay..
Many thanks go to Charlotte for her well prepared and delivered sessions, Coreen Maynard for much gear collection and movement all over Perth, and Nicole Davis, the chief behind-the-scenes organiser.
