Sandon Park, Waterford
Following a very hot week and a forecast of 38 degrees, 60 people attended the event, including several newcomers. Due to the hot weather, the courses were shortened slightly by reducing the number of controls required, to reduce the risk of heat stress. Many competitors also took the opportunity to cool off in the Canning River after their run.
The short course was won by junior Troy Kingma, with Jan Fletcher winning the female category. Winner of the men’s category on the medium course was Nick Dale with Ruben Claessens not far behind in 2nd. Liisa Hirvonen was first female on the medium course, now looking like being a clear contender for the overall series win. For the long course the winners were Rachel West and Sten Claessens. With only two more Metro event for the 2022/23 series a number of categories are likely to come down to these last two events.
As always, this event would not have happened without our volunteers. Thank you to setter Kate Braid, Melinda and Rosalie for IT matters, Noel for mapping and Ceri for conducting the novice briefing. Thank you to control collectors and those who helped pack up – Paul, Veronika, Tim, Sten, Ruben, Tim, Craig, Riley and Sharon.
