Event report: MTBO 5 - WA MD Championships

Pickering Brook

Fine weather and dust (but not mud) free tracks greeted nearly 40 riders and runners to the north east corner of tRicky’s monster Carinyah MTBO map. A lot of earthworks by the authorities trying to keep out 4WDrivers et al added to the usual challenges in our forests (exposed laterite, fallen timber and gumnuts, etc) but all emerged unscathed, professing enjoyment and with some close run contests and winning times fairly close to the guidelines.

Anthea Feaver is our new Women’s MTBO MD Champion and Hadrien Devillepoix continues his reign as Men’s Champion.

Thanks go to Jack Dowling for map updates and course setting and to Sue Dowling for all the organising tasks needed for the day.  Duncan Sullivan earlier converted the map to the latest standards. On the day help came from Rob Pullella, Rob Beattie, Graham Smith, Hadrien Devillepoix, Richard Begley and Paul Dowling who all collected controls. Paul Dowling also towed the toilet to and from the event, while Peter Gillon collected all the road signs. Others helped pack up after the event. Rosalie McCauley provided computer and admin support. Thanks to all these orienteers and to the extra volunteers who offered but weren’t needed.

Treats were also provided – biscuits by Lois West, mandarins by Debbie McKay and Richard Begley and grapefruit by an unknown contributor; all much appreciated.

Our next MTBO outing is the Long Distance Championships in the Murray Valley on 28 August 2022.
