Jones Paskin Reserve, Jones St, Balcatta

The sea breeze arrived just in time to declare the event “on” as it brought the temperature down to 36 °C at start time and it provided some cooling for the duration of the event. Despite the short notice 57 people, including several groups of novices, arrived to navigate the deceptively simple-looking street layout of Balcatta. Apparently most people on the Medium and Long courses looked for shorter routes in the more complex NE portion of the map and did not use the longer, simple routes offered by the “quarter-wagon wheel” (three spokes and rim) array. [OK, the spokes weren’t perfectly straight and only two radiated from the Start, but you get the idea.]

Most participants seemed reasonably comfortable with the heat and enjoyed the challenge. All the course winners were familiar names but the results list in Eventor show plenty of close competition.Melinda Richards again handled the IT tasks and there was an abundance of LOST volunteers to help: Rosemary Kullmann, Tony Simpkins and Jan Fletcher assisted newcomers while Rosemary, Moreen Cox, Liisa Hirvonen, Robert Graieg, Eddie Plummer and Noel Schoknecht collected controls and packed up, which was greatly appreciated by the course setter (Ian Fletcher).

Big thanks go to Ian Fletcher who put out the controls in rather hotter conditions than competitors ran in.
