Event Report: MTBO 3 Carinyah

TashTourCarinyah

Saturday 8th June 2019

A number of die-hard mountain bike orienteers braved the inclement weather to come to Carinyah for this year’s 3rd MTBO event. The afternoon bagan well, nice and sunny and perfect for a 7 km ride around the Carinyah map with the Guided Tour. It was a social ride that also covered some good navigation tips. Afterwards we practiced bike handling skills - heavy pedals & light hands and put it all to the test. Focusing on putting all your weight to your pedals helps keep the centre of gravity on your bike low and close to the ground. This helps you keep more stable, and is good for cornering and any sort of riding.

More orienteers arrived and headed out on their course(s) to tackle the many tracks and not-too-steep hills. All returned to the assembly area in good spirits. Besides the usual mountain bikes, we had a tandem and an electric bike – the latter a first for OWA MTBO.

A big thank you goes to Jack Dowling for setting the courses, putting out the controls, and then collecting them again later in the week as the weather permitted. Thanks also to Paul Dowling for registration and results, the biscuit bakers Lois, Debbie and Sue, and the bread and sausages (Natasha and Ricky). Thanks to those who offered to collect controls – we would have taken you up on your offers, but the weather conspired against us, with a heavy and prolonged downpour starting around course closure time.

Join us at the next MTBO event for a guided tour with more tips and tricks. Happy trails!
