Event report: Sprint 5

On Wednesday this past week I thought, “Eew, only five people have registered on Eventor”. By Saturday the numbers were looking good. I would like to thank all those people who signed up and ran on Sunday because I felt that all the work everyone put into this event was worth it.

Judging from Livelox it was pleasing to me to see that the “hard courses” supported my intention to ensure some degree of route choice and the occasional conundrum. I am also pleased that there were only two maps left at the end of the day, even though one or two runners needed to share with someone else who had run on a different course.

All this could not have been possible without the fact that Ron Marcus was the apprentice course setter and I hope that someone else will take him on at future events to develop his course setting skills. Ron set the Easy course and I believe that he did a great job. Ron also, apart from course setting, has had to learn the ropes on the other skills such as organising materials, opening up The Shed, and so on.

Carol Brownlie as organiser always does a great job. She and Helen Post, WOW club convenor, have made sure that the “on the day” things are checked and ensured that they are done. Ken Post was great – putting out many controls – thanks Ken. The other Ken - Ken Brownlie - made himself available to do the other jobs that needed doing.  I must also thank Melinda and others of the OWA technical team who sorted out a “glitch” with control numbering that was outside anybody’s control. Thankfully, it did not affect any results for the day.

Control collectors were great – we had more than were required and a big thank you to those that offered. I will include you in the following list:  Helen Post, Mark Lommers, Neve Lommers, Kathrine Lommers, Quinn Lommers, Ron Marcus (and Ron’s friend), Brian Austin, Carolyn Read and daughter Rosie for doing meet and greet, and anyone else that I have forgotten (sorry).

One more thing: I was given the impression by Hale School that we were the only group at the venue. Evidently that was wrong. Thank you for your patience, especially as the gate wasn’t opened until a member of another group opened it for us. In spite of this I think the day turned out well – the rain held off, there were some excellent results on each of the courses. We had 15 casuals, and 79 competitors on the day, which is excellent considering there are about 20 West Aussies away orienteering in Europe.
