The Australian Schools Long & Relay Championships, and Kambarang Classic (KC) Days 2 & 3, were held under blue skies at Frazzle Rock, Jelcobine, near Brookton. The competition area was hilly farmland; the courses provided amazing views over the surrounding countryside, and in places wildflowers were abundant.

Many competitors found the ASOC Long / KC day 2 courses challenging, mostly due to thicker vegetation and overall lower runnability than the Peterdine area last weekend. However, winning times were mostly as expected (although a little on the longer side), and there were not many MPs / DNFs, so overall the competition went smoothly. ASOC Relay / KC 3 courses were in a more open area of the map, with less thick vegetation.

Sheep and kangaroos were less prominent than in Peterdine, but there were plently of spider webs, and some reports of bull ant bites at the start of the ASOC Long. Clearly, Peterdine's Noongar name Bitidiin (Place of Ants) did not live up to its name last weekend. However, anyone running a course today would have found our Noongar description ‘Boyayambeliin’ (Place of Flat Rocks) an apt description of the Frazzle map area.*

In ASOC, New Zealanders performed very well in a foreign terrain in both Long and Relay events, and NSW overall dominated the Australian side. In Relays, WA Teams also performed well, with Senior Girls finishing as 2nd Australian team (5th overall) and Junior Boys as 3rd Australian team (4th overall).

Final scores from the Australian Schools Championships: NSW 67, Queensland 61, ACT 60, Tasmania 48, SA 34, WA 33, Victoria 30. Well done WA team - it is the first time since 1992 that WA did not finish last!

For ASOC Long / KC day 2, big thanks to setters Hadrien Devillepoix, Ellie Sansom & Tim Sharp and controller Dan Greig, and for ASOC Relays / KC day 3, setter Edward Plummer assisted by Richard Matthews and Mark Lommers, and controller Ian Fletcher. And again, a whole host of volunteers helping run everything smoothly! Thanks also to our catering providers Mysta Barista, who were booked to cater for the ASOC Sprint only, but found the ASOC so enticing they decided to follow us in their van to Frazzle for the next two events.

*Sadly, the original Noongar name for this place has been lost. We have given it a name in Noongar language that adheres to typical Noongar naming conventions.
