Welcome to the Australian Orienteering Championships in Western Australia! Kambarang Carnival kicked off today with the Australian Middle Distance Championships. The farmland terrain provided fast, open running with complex and challenging granite detail. The weather stayed pleasant, having thankfully cooled down from midweek's over 30 degrees.
Special welcome to Team New Caledonia who managed to complete their courses despite travel complications. With their flight from Noumea cancelled, they had to make alternative arrangements. After sleeping at the airport and a long trip to the start line at Peterdine, they arrived after the last starts, but before the courses closed. Amid jet-lag, they all managed to complete their courses!
Today's event had 543 starting competitors in 51 classes, competing on 18 different courses navigating a total of 97 controls. Most winning times were within the expected range, and overall, the competitors seemed to enjoy their courses. The most popular class was Women's 16A with 35 starting competitors, followed by Men's 16A with 33 starting competitors.
A big thank you to Noel Schoknecht who totally remapped the area using LIDAR to ISOM 2017-2 specifications, and set today's courses! Thanks also to the event controller Graham Braid (who is also the Carnival Director!), IOF Event Adviser Andrew Lumsden, the landowners for allowing access to this wonderful terrain, and many other helpers who made everything run smoothly.
