The final weekend of the Kambarang Carnival saw the Australian Long Distance and Australian Sprint Championship competitions play out.
Start times for the Long Distance Championships on Saturday in Avon Valley national park (Gogulgar Werdin) had been brought forward by an hour due to hot weather forecast, but the temperature had already climbed to almost 30 degrees before it was time for the earliest starters to head out to the bush at 8.30am. The temperature reached 37 degrees towards the end of the competition, leaving the control collectors with a sweaty job for the afternoon.
The 2023 ASOC was held October 3-5th. The results for the Australian Schools Championships and the Southern Cross Junior Challenge, as well as the ASOC Honour team, were announced at the ASOC presentations on Thu Oct 5th evening.
Final scores from the Australian Schools Championships:
- NSW 67
- Queensland 61
- ACT 60
- Tasmania 48
- SA 34
- WA 33
- Victoria 30
The Australian Schools Long & Relay Championships, and Kambarang Classic (KC) Days 2 & 3, were held under blue skies at Frazzle Rock, Jelcobine, near Brookton. The competition area was hilly farmland; the courses provided amazing views over the surrounding countryside, and in places wildflowers were abundant.
Many competitors found the ASOC Long / KC day 2 courses challenging, mostly due to thicker vegetation and overall lower runnability than the Peterdine area last weekend. However, winning times were mostly as expected (although a little on the longer side), and there were not many MPs / DNFs, so overall the competition went smoothly. ASOC Relay / KC 3 courses were in a more open area of the map, with less thick vegetation.
Due to the forecast of warm to hot weather on Saturday 7th October, the decision has been made to move all start times forward by an hour for the Australian Long Championships. The new start times have been published on Eventor and are simply your original start time minus one hour.
You still need to consider if competing in these conditions is right for you. The early start will mitigate the effects of the heat somewhat, but it is still your choice to compete.
