NOONGAR

Karbomunup is the name of the hill at the SW corner of MLC, and its surrounding area, including the escarpment, where there was a spring.
Karbomunup means either ‘dark hill’ or ‘place of black water’.

Karbomunup was winnaitch (a taboo place), because some children had broken an important food law there, angering the local wargyl (giant rainbow serpent spirit) who came out of the hill and swallowed them.

Karbomunup is in the boodja (country) of the Whadjak Noongar people, who lived around the Swan and Canning Rivers.
