Foxes Lair is a 68 hectare nature reserve on the western outskirts of Narrogin. The reserve has diverse terrain with gravelly uplands and breakaways, large granite boulders and attractive valleys. Parking is available at several locations but the most suitable carpark for those wishing to use the orienteering courses is at the Claypit picnic area. Here there is room not only for cars but also for a school bus to park. Entry to the Claypit picnic area is off Williams Road, opposite the corner of the cemetery, just west of the junction of Williams Road and Lefroy Street.
While there are picnic facilities at Claypit and two other areas, there are no toilets or bins. The nearest toilets are located at the cemetery. Users of the Reserve are asked to take all their rubbish with them for disposal.
Courses
There are 4 standard line courses available:
Starter: Basic navigation, with the easiest route choices being along ‘handrails’ (tracks, on this course) (1.6km, 30m climb)
Easy: Basic navigation, with easiest route choices being along ‘handrails’ but with some safe cross-country options (2.5km, 50m climb)
Moderate: Cross-country navigation can be fastest on most legs but all have track options. There are no complex control sites (2.5km, 50m climb)
Hard: Maximum route choice options and some control sites that require detailed map interpretation (4.1km, 80m climb)
There is also a scatter course with all 20 controls.
The start and finish for all these courses is at the north end of the Claypit picnic area. Other starts could be used by anyone prepared to design their own course using the existing control sites shown on the ‘all controls’ scatter course map. The safety bearing on all courses is west to the boundary fence.
Information on the types of Control Markers and the Control Letter Codes, to check whether the course was completed correctly, are contained in the Anytime Orienteering Foxes Lair, Narrogin Guide (PDF).
