Augusta is an attractive town on the south-west coast of WA, where the Blackwood River flows into Flinders Bay. It is a popular holiday destination, 319km south of Perth. Anytime Orienteering provides an interesting activity for both visitors and locals, with courses of different lengths to suit a range of ages and physical fitness. Note that the short course is suitable for those with limited mobility (e.g. in wheelchairs, pushing strollers) provided that participants consider using footpaths rather than tracks which are sandy.
If you want to try a course and don’t have the facilities to download and print a map, go to the Augusta Community Resource Centre at 66 Allnut Terrace between 9.30 and 3.00pm on a weekday. They have public use computers and a printing service.
Courses
There are 3 standard line courses and a scatter course available for downloading.
Line courses
Short: 1.4km; 5m climb
Medium: 2.8km; 35m climb
Long: 4.4km; 60m climb
Please note that the course lengths given are ‘as the crow flies’ distances. You will have to deviate from the straight line to go around private property etc.
Scatter course
There is also a scatter course that has all 20 controls used for the line courses.
The start and finish for all these courses is at the cleared area on the waterfront at the Ellis Street jetty adjacent to a parking area and toilets. Other starts could be used by anyone prepared to design their own course using the existing control sites shown on the ‘all controls’ scatter course map.
Control Markers
In the Augusta map area control markers are attached to the control features or on a post at the feature, as specified in the control descriptions. The control markers are 10cm square plates showing the identification number listed in the control descriptions and a 2-letter code. When you reach each control, write the letters in the numbered boxes on the map to show that you have visited the correct control.
See photo on the right.
A list of the Control Letter Codes, to check whether you have completed the course correctly, can be downloaded.
Organisational and Safety Guidelines can also be downloaded.
