Gold and Silver for WA at World Masters

Sunday, 18 October 2009

Western Nomads stalwarts Cath Chalmers and Anthea Feaver delivered two medals at the World Masters Orienteering Championships in NSW.  First up was Feaver in the sprint finals who went in as the Australian W50 Champion from a week earlier.  Judy Burge (GB) took the early lead at Sydney Olympic Park as French star  Line Roirand fell away with a mistake at no. 3.  Feaver took the lead with the fastest split to 6, and extended the lead to 21 seconds by no. 10.  However, successive mistakes at 11 and 12 saw Feaver drop to third and the flying Kiwi, Gillian Ingham,  took gold with 5 fastest splits in the last 9 controls.  Feaver recovered and overhauled Burge for silver.

In the W40, another Kiwi, Marquita Gelderman took gold in the sprint and as W35 Champion from the World Masters in Victoria in 2002, went into the Long Distance final at "Carwell's Labyrinth", north of Lithgow as clear favourite.  Sandra Olivier of FRA was also well credentialled, having taken bronze in the sprint in Sydney and also in last year's Long Distance in Portugal.  In fact, Olivier took the lead early, as Gelderman made a slow start.  Then it was Barbara Hill (AUS) to the front,  before she spun out on the second long leg, losing 8 minutes.  Cath Chalmers had never been far off the lead and with the fastest split on that leg, stormed to the front with a two minute lead.  That was more than enough and Chalmers held on for gold despite two small errors at 7 and 8.  Olivier took silver ahead of Jennifer Enderby (AUS) with Gelderman in 5th.

Anthea now adds a silver medal to her gold from 2002, and this continues a fantastic run for Western Australian Women - Joy Hiller also took gold in 2002 and Karen Staudte took bronze in Canada in 2005.
